Death Doula

Hugo Simberg – Garden of Death

People spend their entire lives writing their story, but often have very little control over how it ends. The death doula is there to help with that final chapter – providing support and resources so that last pages are written by the same person who started the book.

  • What is a Death Doula? A Death Doula, or End of Life Doula, is there to provide help to the dying and their family/friends during the final months, weeks, days, and/or hours. A Death Doula a non-medical and holistic practitioner who guides individuals (and their loved ones) through the dying process by way of presence, support, advocacy, education, and companionship. Just as birth doulas assist in birthing a new life, death doulas support individuals as they are leaving this life.
  • Why would I need a Death Doula? Death is overwhelming. In these emotional times, particularly when grieving an impending death, it can be a great relief to have a calm and knowledgeable presence. The Death Doula provides a compassionate resource for the dying and their loved ones. There are many different specific services a Death Doula can provide, but they are primarily a resource for both guidance and comfort through the dying process.
  • When should I contact a Death Doula? Death Doulas can be contacted at any time during the end of life process. The sooner the doula can enter into the process, the more time can be spent getting to know the individual and family, and creating plans for care, vigil, and legacy. The goals are to prioritize end of life needs, and to create sacred space and meaning for the individual and family.
  • Do you charge for services? I strongly believe everyone should have the opportunity to have a good death; finances should not be a limiting factor. Making end of life work affordable and accessible is why I have pursued this calling, and I primarily operate on a pay-what-you-can model.

I did my training through INELDA (International End-of-Life Doula Association). They are an invaluable resource.
